Surfs

and stand-up paddle boards

Custom orders only for hollow wooden surfboards and stand-up paddle boards. Ok, so time to fess up. I just can’t keep stock of these. Anytime I have a finished one sat on the shelf, the temptation to go ride it is just too great, and I am weak. The problem is that once you take them out and ride them, you just can’t let them go.

So Customs it is, get in touch and we can work out what you like and how to give you more of it. We can help with sizing, volume, fin placement, shape whatever it is that you may have questions about.

Once we have your design locked in, we can get on and build you a board.

Wooden surf construction, really lends itself to fishtails, longboards and stand up paddle boards, they make great carving boards, with a little more weight behind them than a traditional surfboard (plastic) they smooth out the chop and reduce deflection.

Hollow wooden surfboard construction involves making a wooden skeleton frame which is then clad in different timbers. To make the strongest and lightest frames we use Poplar ply, European grown and incredibly lightweight and strong, it’s the heart of the board. For the cladding and rails we use western red cedar grown in Wales or Palownia grown in Spain, both are superlight and strong. Cork makes a great grip pad under your feet and eliminates the need to wax your board. Once the board is shaped up it is then glassed with a recycled glass fibre and Entropy Bioresin, a whole lot of sanding polishing and uv proofing later, and Voila, she’s ready to rip.

We have also developed an even more natural way of making wooden boards, but it is only suited to certain board shapes. Longboards built this way have something just a little bit special about them.

Using western red cedar it is possible to glue laminate a hollow wooden surfboard blank. By using a little more timber, we can avoid having to use any fibreglass at all, a true wooden board. The finish used on the boards is something we have developed over the years and uses only natural products, Gum Tree Turps, D Limonene citrus thinners, Beeswax, Tung nut oil, Carnauba wax, Damar Pine resin and Amber. Layers of different mixes are built up to first soak into the wood then coat and protect it. The final wax coat is something we will give you a wee pot of so you can keep up with the maintenance.

I love making these boards, so please get in touch on the form below and give me a reason to shape the next one.
